We are hiring a Staff Accountant in Edmonton, AB to be responsible for full-cycle accounts payable and payroll processing for CESSCO Fabrication & Engineering Ltd. This is a full-time position with 40 hours of work per week and a $30-$37 per hour wage, depending on experience.

This position ensures the accurate and timely processing of vendor payments, employee expenses, and payroll, supporting the Financial Controller in maintaining financial integrity, compliance, and internal controls. The role is evenly divided between general accounting (50%) and payroll (50%), contributing directly to the accuracy of financial reporting and the smooth operation of the accounting function.

Responsibilities falling under accounts payable and general accounting duties include processing vendor invoices, maintaining and updating the ERP vendor master, collaborating with the Controller and Purchasing departments, processing A/P batches and payments, and reviewing vendor statements.

Payroll processing responsibilities include developing and performing accurate and timely end-to-end payroll process for all CESSCO employees; setting up and maintaining employee records in ERP, ADP, and benefits platforms; and receiving, validating, and processing daily timesheets; among other duties.

Year-end, compliance, and reporting are also a key part of the Staff Accountant's responsibilities. Preparing and processing T4s, T2200s, taxable benefits, garnishments, EHT, WCB, and union payroll submissions as well as completing all required year-end filings with regulatory agencies within prescribed deadlines. Internal and external audits and payroll reports also fall within the responsibilities of our Staff Accountant.

This role requires expertise and experience as such we're looking for someone who has worked in full-cycle, in-house payroll positions for 5-7 years and who has experience processing union payroll is required. Certified Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation is an asset.

Strong organizational and time management skills are necessary in this role, and we will also be looking for a candidate who can show a history of self-motivated work both independently and collaboratively within a team and excellent interpersonal and communication skills. An ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgement with sensitive information is critical.

Duties

Accounts Payable and General Accounting

  • Process vendor invoices with a complete three-way match, confirming approvals, funding, and receiving documentation are in place.
  • Maintain and update the ERP vendor master; collaborate with the Controller and Purchasing to pursue early payment discounts.
  • Process A/P batches and payments on a just-in-time basis, ensuring all vendors are paid within agreed terms.
  • Review vendor statements, investigate discrepancies, and escalate issues where necessary.
  • Ensure adherence to dual-approval and payment controls while maintaining vigilance for fraud, phishing, and cybersecurity threats.
  • Support general accounting activities including bank reconciliations, cash receipts, intercompany transactions, fixed assets, account reconciliations, and journal entries.
  • Participate in cross-training and provide coverage within the accounting team to ensure business continuity.

 

Payroll Processing

  • Direct, mentor, and develop the Perform accurate and timely end-to-end payroll processing for all Cessco employees.
  • Set up and maintain employee records in ERP, ADP, and benefits platforms; process new hires, changes, and terminations.
  • Receive, validate, and process daily timesheets; support the transition to electronic time entry systems.
  • Balance and validate time entries weekly or bi-weekly; process payroll using ERP and ADP WFN.
  • Process payments for DSPs and subcontractors following management approval.
  • Support ongoing payroll improvements, process efficiency, and compliance initiatives.
  • Carry out other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Company from time to time.

 

Year-End, Compliance, and Reporting

  • Prepare and process T4s, T2200s, taxable benefits, garnishments, EHT, WCB, and union payroll submissions.
  • Complete all required year-end filings with regulatory agencies within prescribed deadlines.
  • Maintain payroll data security and confidentiality at all times.
  • Prepare payroll and benefits reports for internal management and external auditors.
  • Conduct internal audits to verify payroll accuracy and compliance with legislation.
  • Support external audits and information requests related to payroll and benefits.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Experience

  • 5–7 years of full-cycle, in-house payroll experience.
  • Previous experience processing union payroll is required.
  • Certified Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian payroll legislation, tax regulations, and employment standards.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel (advanced formulas, Pivot Tables, data imports/exports).
  • Experience with ERP and ADP systems preferred.
